Hot Topic: Versions of the Bible

1.  I'm curious... What version of the Bible do you most use and why?

I know that this is a hot topic but it is an interesting one to me.  I am not asking for you to trash talk other versions.  I want to know why YOU use the one that YOU use.

2.  Have you done research (I mean REAL research) into the version that you use in order to choose it over another?

My "first" really-my-own Bible was New King James so that is the translation I have "memorized" when looking up verses. I have utterly trashed that Bible and it is broken, falling apart, and sits upon a shelf in my bedroom for "special occasions" when I must pull out my "old" sword and FIGHT!

I now use New Living Translation because it was cute and small and portable and "on sale". :) I like it for the most part but it is hard when things are "memorized" and you go to share a verse and "well it doesn't sound the same" but has the same meaning.

We have NASB, The Message, NIV, Amplified Bible, and KJV, and honestly (I am too lazy to get up and check for sure) many more.

I have not done specific research--I know it is a controversial subject for some--but not for me.

I'll be interested to see what others have to say!

Good question. I have used the NASB for years and feel most comfortable with that. Right now I'm reading the Daily Bible, a read through the Bible in a year plan, which is NIV. I also have a Message that I like to read from time to time. My husband uses an NASB but is starting to really like the ESV (drats, I forgot what it stands for, most likely English Standard Version??) What do you use?

It was wise of you to warn us not to talk 'trash' about some of the versions. I was at a blog recently in which this very topic came up, and people were hitting each other over the head if they picked the 'wrong' translation. Ugh...

My NIV has a study guide, which I love to use. It's the Bible I write notes in, and highlight, and pretty much made a coloring book out of.

But I also love 'The Message' and the refreshing way Eugene Peterson brings color and newness.

I grew up with Louis Second version which is the french version. That's the one I have memorized and quote when I need too. I have try learning tried the king James it was kinda awkward for me, now I have turn to the NIV for daily reading but still trying the king James since the translation is closer to what I know.

I use an NIV because it's easy for me to read and it's accurately translated :) I hear the ESV is good, too, but I find it doesn't flow as nicely.
